If you are in the planning stage for a kitchen remodel, you have likely realized that there are so many decisions to make. For our customers unsure where to start, we recommend choosing a decorative style first. This allows you to narrow down your options instead of searching through thousands of countertop, cabinet, and backboard combinations.
We have outlined the main features of the different kitchen design styles to get you started.
Traditional – Traditional cuisine is the most popular style. It combines old and new design elements to create a comfortable and stylish space. Here are a few of
- Cabinets: You can use RTA cabinets in a traditional kitchen and save money on remodeling. The best color is white or some other light, airy color.
- Countertops – Granite or quartz countertops are the best choices for your traditional kitchen. Your choice of color will depend on what you’ve chosen for your cabinets, but something simpler is a good choice.
- Floors – The most popular choice for floors in a traditional kitchen is hardwood. You can also choose tiles that look like wooden boards.
Contemporary – You can also describe the contemporary style as “minimalist” as this type of kitchen isn’t too flashy. But that doesn’t mean it has to be boring!
- Cabinets – Elegant, full-surface cabinets with flat panel doors are a beautiful centerpiece of the modern kitchen.
- Countertops – Treat yourself to marble countertops to add a nice touch to a modern kitchen. As I said, contemporary doesn’t mean boring!
- Hardware – The hardware should be simple with long, clean lines. Tubular door handles would make an excellent finish to your dark RTA cabinets.
Farm – Thanks to Joanna Gaines, the farmhouse kitchen has been one of the most popular options for a kitchen remodel in recent years. The country style is a mix of industrial style with softer colors and décor.
Here are a few must-haves for your country kitchen:
- Cabinets – Your cabinets should be classic and sleek, so Shaker cabinets are our preferred cabinets for country kitchens. Most country style kitchen cabinets are white or off-white.
- Backsplash – A simple white or gray backsplash with subway tile is all you need for country style. If you want to move it up a bit, you can arrange the tiles in an unexpected pattern like herringbone.
- Sink – You can’t have a farmhouse kitchen without a large front sink. You can opt for a classic white ceramic sink or swap it out for a stainless steel or copper sink to add character to the area.
Mid-Century – The mid-century kitchen combines a whimsical combination of traditional and modern design. This can be one of the more difficult design styles since you have so much space to add your own style, but when you’re ready to try it out, here are some of the basics to consider:
- Counters – Laminate worktops are ideal for this trend. No color is taboo! You can choose blue, yellow, orange, or even green countertops if you are brave enough. If you like things a little more subtle, you can choose a wooden butcher’s block as the counter.
- Cabinets – You need to opt for wood cabinets to fit in with the mid-century design. Flat-paneled RTA cabinets would be the ideal option as simple lines are required to stay on trend.
- Backsplash – The backsplash in a mid-century kitchen should be the star of the show. Look for geometrically patterned tiles in bold, bright colors to bring this space to life.
Southwest – One of the hottest new trends in Southeastern cuisine. If you’re unfamiliar with the Southwest, the culture and style combine Native American culture with the Spanish and Mexican influences that settled in the area hundreds of years ago. For a kitchen with a southwestern flair, you want lots of warm, earthy colors. Here are some more must-haves:
- Cabinets – You can use either white or wooden RTA cabinets as a base for your southwest kitchen,
- Backsplash – Play with your Spanish-style backsplash by choosing Talavera tiles. These are square tiles with stunning painted patterns. A cheaper option could be a painted brick for your backsplash.
- Flooring – Your floors should be a warm terracotta tile. This in turn gives the kitchen an earthy element that is essential in a south-western room.
